Cygwin + oh-my-zsh
wojtek · Posted on 2014-01-272014-12-21

Someone named haithembelhaj has written a script for getting all this set up, and it includes apt-cyg! One command and cygwin is (almost) fully configured. Awesome: https://github.com/haithembelhaj/oh-my-cygwin/

Getting PHP in Homebrew to access MSSQL via FreeTDS and PDO dblib
wojtek · Posted on 2013-11-112014-12-21

This quick little guide is aimed primary at me in the future, but I hope it could be of some use to others as well. This process can be used to install any PHP extension into any version of PHP that comes pre-packed but doesn’t include it. Some examples are: Packages missing from homebrew-php MAMP …

Somewhat inefficient

Kofax. Turning a 12KB one page monochrome TIFF into a PDF. And, that’s only 60% of the final size in memory. This is what developers who force a $10k per year maintenance contract produce.

A positive externality to petty graft?

George Will’s second last column talks about solitary confinement but touches on an interesting statistic. The US incarcerates a massively disproportionate number of people. I was wondering how this could be the case for a country with legally enshrined due process and generally respected cops. Americans don’t seem any more prone to crime than others. …

Arrow keys in vim on Cygwin via ssh
wojtek · Posted on 2013-01-232014-12-21

After installing Cygwin, for the 100th time, on the 89th Windows machine, I was again plagued with not being able to use arrow keys in vim via an ssh connection. Turns out the solution is dead simple: cp /usr/share/vim/vim##/vimrc_example.vim ~/.vimrc Replace ## with your vim version, of course. That’s all. wojtek · Posted on 2012-12-112014-12-21

Is the Tesla S a Good Buy? Some friends of mine have recently been touting the incredible deal that is the Tesla S. At hearing my general skepticism of “leaps” in engineering, and debating for a solid hour during my younger son’s birthday party, they asked me to run a rudimentary cost assessment. Fair enough. …

Missed in the Apple Maps consensus
wojtek · Posted on 2012-10-122015-01-12

In all of the discussion about errors committed during the development and launch of Apple Maps, the most important shortcoming has systematically been omitted. Let me explain. When I switched to iOS from Android at the beginning of this year, I was immediately struck by the absence of navigation. In an attempt to address this, …

Sync Google Shared Calendars with iOS
wojtek · Posted on 2012-10-072014-12-21

While attempting to subscribe my iPhone to privately Gmail shared calendars within the family, I discovered online instructions at HowToGeek that explain the (really simple) process. Have a look. Update: Obviously this is no longer necessary! Just use the built-in iOS functionality.
